Podcast Announcement

Michelle and I are pleased to announce that we have signed The Neurodivergent Woman Podcast with Diamantina Media. Diamantina Media works with original and unique Australian podcasts to help them reach more people in an authentic manner.  Michelle and I decided to work with Diamantina Media as it was important to us that our values and our creative control remain true to us while being able to reach more people with our content.

Thankyou everyone for supporting the podcast and we hope to deliver more quality psychological information and the real life experiences of neurodivergent women for a long time to come! Thankyou to Diamantina Media for supporting us in this quest!

Patreon

Dr Michelle and I are looking at ways of delivering neurodiversity affirming resources and information to people who are looking for additional tips and support at a low cost, as the demand for therapy is very high and difficult to meet. Therefore we have started a Patreon account of which there are two tiers. We hope this extension of the podcast will also help our listeners overseas and in places where neurodiversity affirming resources and help is hard to find. We hope to build a community to help and support one another.

ADHD Change.org Petition

People diagnosed with ADHD after the age of 18 have only recently been able to access a long acting form of stimulant medication called Vyvanse on the PBS in February 2021 after much lobbying. Before this change they were only able to access short acting medication under the PBS. This is big step in equitable and affordable treatment. The PBAC also recommended at its March 2020 meeting that the adult ADHD listing changes for adult diagnosis for lisdexamfetamine (Vyvanse) should flow on to all other long-acting ADHD medicines on the PBS, including methylphenidate (Concerta and Ritalin LA) and atomoxetine (Strattera).

However this has yet to happen.

There should be no age discrimination on the PBS availability of medications stemming from the age of the individual at diagnosis. Girls and women with ADHD have found it difficult to gain a diagnosis even in adulthood and were often missed in childhood as historically ADHD was thought mostly to be found in boys who were hyperactive and disrupting the classroom. Girls and women are often underdiagnosed and are thus unfairly affected by the age of diagnosis factor. Many only gain a diagnosis later in life and to get a diagnosis of ADHD as an adult symptoms have to be present in childhood anyway. It also discriminates against other minorities or those who haven't had the means to get diagnosed in childhood.

This petition asks to expand the PBS to cover other long acting stimulant medication for ADHD so adults with a late diagnosis can get fair and affordable access to all treatments.

The petition also asks that the pharmaceutical manufacturer's see that the research and cultural mindset around adult ADHD has shifted in the past 10 years with more recognition of ADHD continuing into adulthood. Therefore we ask the manufacturer's to recognize the demand for these treatments for adults and make submissions to the PBS for their approval.
